Document your valuables before it's too late

After a burglary or water damage, your home contents insurer wants to know what you owned, what it was worth and how you can prove it. ValuSafe has that answer ready in advance: every item is recorded with photos, purchase price, current value, room and receipts. One click turns this into an insurance export, a PDF for your files or a handover report for moving house. The insurance overview shows whether the agreed sum insured actually covers the recorded value.

When it has happened, the damage claim assistant introduced in version 4.4 helps: select the affected items – stolen, destroyed or damaged – and ValuSafe creates a list for the police with photos, serial numbers and features, plus a claim report for the insurer with purchase and current value, receipts and an editable cover letter. Since version 4.4.1, the photos and receipts of all affected items can also be downloaded as a ZIP file – one folder per item, ready to pass on.

Record items at your desk or on the go: on a smartphone, one tap opens quick entry — photo, name, save. Photos can be cropped and rotated on the spot. The camera reads barcodes and ISBNs; name and cover come from open databases.

ValuSafe runs where you want it: on ordinary web space with PHP and MySQL, in a Docker container or on a NAS. Your data never leaves your own server. Several users can share one collection, and what each role may do can be set down to individual actions. The interface speaks ten languages.

If you'd rather not run a server, use Valu-Basic: the single-user edition for a USB stick, started with a double-click on Windows or macOS.

Both are free, with no subscription and no ads, and released under the MIT licence. They are developed by Jörg Steinhäuser with the help of the AI tool Claude.

Questions editors ask

What does ValuSafe cost?

Nothing. Both programs are released under the MIT licence, with no subscription, no ads and no paid edition. Anyone who wants to can make a voluntary contribution.

How do you make money from it?

Not at all. There is no business model, no premium features and no use of data.

Where is my data stored?

Only on the user's server or stick. ValuSafe sends no data to the developer. The only things that leave it are what the user explicitly triggers: the barcode lookup in open product databases and, if wanted, e-mails (password reset, backup report).

What role does AI play?

The code was written with the help of the AI tool Claude. Every change is reviewed, tested and released by the developer. The application itself contains no AI feature and sends no data to AI services.

How secure is ValuSafe?

Passwords hashed with Argon2id, protection against repeated sign-in attempts, CSRF protection for all forms, security headers, two-factor sign-in for all accounts, permissions checked on the server. There is no external audit and no certificate. Security reports go to valusafe@palindrom.de (see SECURITY.md in the repository).

What are the limitations?
  • The Valu-Basic start scripts are not signed; Windows shows a SmartScreen warning at the first start.
  • The Content Security Policy still allows inline scripts.
  • Valu-Basic has no public code repository (the code is included in the ZIP).
  • No smartphone app from a store; ValuSafe can be installed as a web app (PWA).
  • Amounts are kept in euros.
  • The insurance export and the handover report are in German only so far.
  • The documentation (manuals, FAQ) is in German only so far.
Who is behind it?

Jörg Steinhäuser, privately and without a company.

What's next?

ValuSafe is maintained continuously; the changes are listed in the public changelog. Plans include, among other things, a fixed assignment of items to user accounts and further translations. There are no fixed dates.

Can I try ValuSafe?

Yes: valusafe.palindrom.de is a public demo with sample data (in German; the interface can be switched to English) that is reset every hour.
